QUESTION TO CONSIDER

Q. My colleague had lipstick on her front teeth. Should I have said something?

A. Yes. You can simply describe the situation, “Jen, you have lipstick on your teeth.” Or “Tom, your fly is undone.” Most people appreciate being saved from further embarrassment. If you are uncomfortable because of gender, get someone else to do it.

PRESCRIPTION FOR SUCCESS

Learn to express sympathy. The loss of a loved one is a difficult time for people, and expressing sympathy can be comforting to them. You can say, “I’m sorry for your loss.” Or “I just heard the news and I’m sorry for your loss.” Or “I’m sorry for your loss. I know how close you were to your grandmother.” Offer to help, if appropriate: “Don’t worry about the presentation. I will do your part for you.”
